AS DEMOLITION gangs moved into a North-East estate residents were promised they were witnessing a new beginning for their area.
The reassurance was given at Grangetown, near Middlesbrough, where a major regeneration programme began yesterday.
Iain Sim, chief executive of Coast and Country Housing, said: "Monday's demolition marks the start of a brighter future for the estate.
"We have ambitious plans for the area and are working with local residents on all aspects of the improvements.''
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council transferred its housing stock to Coast and Country Housing last summer. As demolition work began, two residents of the estate took symbolic control of a bulldozer to start demolishing empty houses in Borrowdale Road.
During the next ten weeks, 31 empty houses in Borrowdale, Deepdale and Rydal Avenue will be demolished, with plans to pull down another 20.
Mr Sim said: "This is a further example of Coast and Country Housing delivering on the promises we have made to tenants and their communities.''
