PEOPLE in Darlington are being offered free smoke alarms and advice after a house fire in the town.
The cause of the blaze, on the first-floor of a semi-detached property in Starmer Crescent, is still being investigated. But Station Officer Steve Wharton, from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue, said that the house did not have smoke alarms fitted.
"We have decided to target the surrounding area to encourage people to get smoke alarms. If people don't have alarms they can contact us and we will come out and do a home safety check. We'll assist by providing two smoke alarms for free," said Mr Wharton.
