THE guides of A W Wainwright are back on the shelves of a bookshop - much to the delight of walkers and Lake District enthusiasts.

The famous walking guides were discontinued earlier this year when the publisher, Michael Joseph, decided they were no longer compatible with the rest of its list.

Complaints from walkers led to a national outcry until the London publishing house, Frances Lincoln, stepped in to resurrect the titles and reprint the books in Kendal, Cumbria, where they originated.

To mark the return of the series, staff at the Northallerton Bookshop, North Yorkshire, on the town's Barkers Arcade, launched the collection dressed in their best walking gear.

Manager Sue Place said: "These new Wainwright editions will become instantly collectable.

"After the earlier versions disappeared, we were asked for them constantly. The reissued first editions are going to be limited and are therefore expected to walk off the shelves."

Copies of the Wainwright guides can be reserved by contacting The Northallerton Bookshop on (01609) 779791.
