Billingham and Sunderland Junior Ice Hockey Clubs were represented at the 2003 Hockey UK tournament in Kirkcaldy at U12 and U18 age groups. Billingham took part in both while Sunderland only at U12 level.

Sunderland Cherokees were winners of the U12 event as well as receiving three of the tournament awards.

Grant Sharp was top points scorer. Ross Hanlon, defenceman of the tournament for least penalty minutes total.

Sharp and Nathan Salem each hit hat-tricks as Cherokees began with a 10-0 win over Flintshire Flyers. Joshpua Lalande (2), Ashleigh Holland and Daniel Coffey netted the other four. Sharp struck all three in his side's 3-1 win over Telford Terrahawks.

Hosts Kirkcaldy Redskins went down 2-1 to Cherokees with Salem and Sharp on target. A Salem hat-trick as well as a Ross Hanlon effort was enough for a 4-0 win over Billingham Pumas.

Already in the semi-finals Cherokees completed their round robin games with a 5-2 win against Dundee Tigers. Salem and Sharp each weighed in with braces plus a Jake Shanks goal.

Dundee met Cherokees in the semis with the outcome the same as Sunderland won 6-4. Salem, Lalande and Callum Davies helped Cherokees on the way with a 3-0 lead. Dundee cut the deficit by two, but that was the nearest they got. Salem added his side's other three.

A straight hat-trick from Sharp plus another from Salem eased Cherokees into a 4-0 lead after 19 minutes. In the final against Telford Salem also completed his hat-trick as the sides traded goals in a 6-2 Cherokees victory.

Billingham Pumas were knocked out at the semi-final stage going down 5-1 to Telford. Robert Heale equalised for Pumas at 06.15. Pumas began with a 0-0 draw against Kirkcaldy which was followed by a narrow 1-0 win over Dundee. Jonathan Galloway scored the winning goal. Both Heale and Galloway as well as three Dundee players received game misconducts.

This was followed by two defeats against Telford (1-4) and Sunderland (0-4). Andy Finn scored Pumas' lone strike against Telford. Flintshire were their last opponents in the round robin which Pumas won 5-1. Heale (2), Finn, Callum Clark and James Moss were Pumas scorers.

Billingham Wolves finished fourth of six in the U18 event in Kirkcaldy. Their opening game on Friday was a 0+4 loss to hosts Kirkcaldy Falcons. A James McCabe goal was not enough the next day to prevent a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Nottingham Leopards. A third loss came going down 0-5 to Telford Trojans.

A recovery began as Wolves ended the mini league round robin with wins over New Zealand side St Andrews (4-0) and Flintshire Avalanche (9-0). James Udell, Steve Pritchard, Jamie Pattison and Anthony Price scored against St Andrews. Pattison (2), Liam Telford (2), Ricky Box (2), Pritchard, Udell and Stuart Gibbon on target against Flintshire.
