There were further good performances from the North-East sides attending the annual English Schools FA Under-14 Festival on the Isle of Wight.

On Wednesday Sunderland defeated Derby 4-0 when their physically stronger side dominated the game from kick-off. David Baker gave them the lead after only two minutes with Tom Mahon making it 2-0 at the interval.

Derby showed some resilience and neat passing football, but there was no cutting edge and further goals from Michael Lawson and Chris Adey brought them a straightforward win although ironically, goalkeeper Jake Bellfield, was injured during the game.

Sunderland went on to record another 4-0 victory on the third day of the event, this time against Hampshire side Gosport and Fareham, who in fact started the game as the better side. Sunderland came more into the game as half-time approached and Michael Chapman put them ahead with five minutes of the half remaining.

Sunderland controlled the second half with Shaun Wilkie scoring twice and Michael Lawson once. Both would acknowledge their debt to Gavin Colley who was outstanding in midfield.

Bishop Auckland and North Tyneside remain two of only three teams with a 100 per cent record at the festival. The latter followed their 2-1 win on the first day by defeating the local Isle of Wight side 2-1 and followed that with a 1-0 victory over London side Haringey.

Bishop Auckland are the second top goalscorers to date at the event following their 5-0 win over Plymouth with a 3-0 success against Wellingborough and Rushden and then beating the Isle of Wight 3-0.

After beating Coventry 7-2 on the first day of the festival, Newcastle suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat at the hands of Oxfordshire six Vale of White Horse, but returned to form by beating Derby 5-0 yesterday.
