RECENT rain have failed to reduce the risk of fire on the North York Moors.

The National Park Authority is concerned about the risk of fire damage to the moors. Fire warning notices remain in place and people are being asked to be particularly vigilant in avoiding any fire risk.

Richard Gunton, head of park services for the authority, said: "Assessments of the fire risk on the moors have reported that it continues to be very high. The fine weather we have experienced over recent weeks has left moorland and forests dry and vulnerable to fire.

"The authority is asking everyone to exercise extreme caution with regard to the potential fire risk."

Senior ranger Bernie McLinden said: "The weather forecast for Pickering and the surrounding area is for rain for several days from the end of April onwards.

"Until this predicted rainfall arrives the risk of fire remains high. Any major fire that does occur will be particularly devastating at this time because there are many ground-nesting birds on the moor."
