AN army of volunteers took to the fields in Middleton St George, near Darlington, to tidy up a nature reserve.

Members of the Middleton St George Wildlife Group and the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers were clearing invasive vegetation and silt from a man-made beck at the Whinnies nature reserve.

Volunteers took part in the clear-up between 10am and 4pm on Saturday.

Helen Tomb, project manager for the trust, said: "The beck was built about 12 years ago, but it is just silted up so we are re-creating the natural habitat to encourage water voles to come further into the nature reserve and expand."
