A VILLAGE festival is making a comeback after it proved a big success two years ago.

The second Burnopfield Festival takes place on Monday.

The first event was held on May Day in 2001 and was meant to be a one-off, but it proved so popular that villagers decided to make it a regular fixture.

Katrina Haigh, one of the organisers, said: "It was such a success the first time that we felt we had to do it again.

"It is a fun day and really brings the community together. Every organisation in Burnopfield is involved, from the Brownies and Cub Scouts upwards."

The event will feature vintage cars and stalls selling plants, arts and crafts.

For youngsters, there will be a bouncy castle and an inflatable slide, plus children's rides and a storyteller.

St James' Church will be serving cream teas and there will be a beer tent and a disco.

The guests of honour will be teachers and staff from Burnopfield Primary School, which celebrates its 70th anniversary this year.

Residents will also get a first glimpse of the village appraisal. The document, funded by the Scarman Trust, aims to highlight strengths and weaknesses in facilities and services for the village. The finished product can be used in securing funding for improvements.

The festival runs from 11am to 3pm. A service to bless the village will be held in St James' Church on Sunday, at 6pm.
