STUDENTS are preparing for their debut at a professional theatre with a classic musical.

Durham University Light Opera Group, in association with the newly-formed Durham University Production Society, is staging Kiss Me Kate, at Durham's Gala Theatre, from tonight until Saturday.

A play within a play, it tells the story of New York actors trying to put on the Taming of the Shrew amid tensions from within and outside the cast.

The show is based on Bella Spewack's book, and features the songs Too Darn Hot, Why Can't You Behave and Always True To You.

Its director, Luke Gasper, will appear on stage in another Gala production when he stars as Prince Charming in the forthcoming pantomime, Cinderella.

He said: "We have just done Kiss Me Kate at the university and it was a case of converting it into a professional-looking production, which we have managed to do.

"It's a fantastic opportunity for the cast and crew, who are all from the university.

"This is a very important link and we are keen to continue our relationship with the Gala."

Tickets for evening and matinee performances are available from the box office on 0191-332 4041.
