Chester-le-Street Town Juniors were beaten 2-0 by Redheugh Boys Club in the Fairs Software Tyneside Junior League Cup Final at Prudhoe Town on Good Friday.

Redheugh started the game brightly but found Chester keeper Shaun Beckwith keen to avenge the mistakes he made in the recent 3-3 league between the two sides.

After 20 minutes Chester began to get involved in the game and forced their best chance of the half when after an excellent build up, Mark Adamson shot just wide.

With the Juniors finishing the half more strongly, Redheugh struck a killer blow. Chester midfielder Michael Renshaw, assigned the task of marking Steven Brown, let Brown out muscle him on the by-line, and Brown cleverly cut the ball back for Steven Richardson to shoot the Reds ahead.

After the interval Redheugh picked up the pace and were the better side. Brown again left Renshaw in his trail when he broke clear and made it 2-0 with a fine left foot effort in the 58th minute. Chester immediately changed things around, adopting a 3-4-3 formation but it was to know avail. Although the Cestrians created more clear chances than Redheugh on the day, their finishing was woeful, rarely hitting the target. A clear chance to get back in the match fell to substitute Andrew Smith in the 78th minute, but he shot tamely at Liam Connell when well placed. It summed up the Cestrians' lacklustre performance.

Juniors Manager Andrew Muxworthy was looking for his side to complete a hat-trick of League Cup Final wins but it was not to be.

He said: "The best team won on the day. The man of the match award was given to David Lowther but in my book Redheugh's Danny Olusuga and particularly their captain Steven Brown were the top men. Brown, who is a big player for Redheugh was outstanding. My big players, didn't turn up today".

The Juniors beat Redheugh 3-1 in last season's County Cup Final and also took four points off the Reds in this season's league.

The Juniors, who lead the Fairs Software League have finished their season six points clear at the top.

However, both Redheugh and Walker Central can overhaul them, but both sides still have to play each other.
