Following heatwave conditions the temperature took a nosedive for Saturday's big 109 pegger at Woodland Lakes Carlton Miniott Thirsk.

Cold winds were a feature and no-one expected a real bonanza day but the complex 'fished its head off' with terrific weights everywhere and a new match record was set, a staggering 127.6.0.

Not surprisingly the record went to Mr Carp himself Map Elton's Dean Smith.

Renown on the match circuit, Dean pulled out Dragonfly 5 and went across to the island at 14.5 metres offering luncheon meat.

The fish were large many specimens in the 6 to 7.0.0 bracket and Dean made no mistake on his way to the new Woodlands best.

Runner-up Dave Cooper responded with 85.10.0 off Partridge 27. The Team Shimano Quaker angler also located quality carp but just couldn't match the winner's pace. Catching on the 7 metre pole and pellet Dave tamed a bonus mirror carp of 8.0.0.

Others: L Harrison (VDE Scunthorpe) 61.3.0; M Veales (Maver Barnsley Blacks) 59.0.0; T Stephenson (Anglers World) 56.10.0.

The Oaks Easter Festival proved an outstanding success run over Sunday and Monday of the Bank Holiday break on section points to decide the winner.

The high-class field produced a tight result staged on the ever popular Maple Lake.

On Day Two it was a bumper payday for Map Elton's Mark Coyne who pulled out the 'jackpot peg' 16.

Mark put 32.5.0 onto the scales consisting of all small carp on the pellet to the island.

There was heartbreak for runner up John Kenning beaten by just 3ozs only for the Snaith rod to find another carp still in his keepnet after the scalesman left.

Overall it couldn't have been closer, four anglers won their sections both days but Map Elton's John McGarrell decided the title with a superior weight of 53.6.0.
