The death of a teenager who plunged from a 100ft cliff is now being treated as an accident.

Detectives are trying to piece together the final hours which led to 17-year-old Kimberley Graham's death from a cliff-top beauty spot.

Miss Graham's 23-year-old boyfriend was questioned by police after her body was found on rocks by a passer-by but after witnesses came forward he was released without charge.

It is believed he told detectives that Miss Graham fell from the cliff while he was in his car. Her body was found on the shoreline at 10.30am on Saturday, at Marsden Grotto, South Shields, South Tyneside.

A helicopter was called to fly the body from the scene for a post-mortem examination.

It is understood that Miss Graham had been out with her boyfriend, who she has known for about a year, and the couple had been in a vehicle parked above the beauty spot at about 6.30am on Saturday.

Witnesses had seen the teenager get out of the car and walk away while the car drove off.

Detective Chief Inspector Frank Whittle, of South Tyneside CID, said: "We want to hear from anyone who may have been in the area and seen Kimberley in the early hours of Saturday."
