AN initiative to develop an arts network across Richmondshire has been awarded a £30,000 grant by the National Lottery.

AiR was launched at the Middleham Key Centre in February, although the idea behind the group dates back to last year.

Its primary objective is to be the driving force behind projects which bring the arts to the more isolated rural communities.

It also plans to help forge partnerships between local organisations, whether they are an amateur dramatics group, a local rock band or aspiring artists.

So far, the agency has held a series of workshops across Richmondshire, encouraging village hall committees to examine how they could replenish depleted funds through staging public performances, while drama groups have been approached to consider touring productions.

"This is fantastic news," said creative director Robin Battersby. "The timing is absolutely right to link with the launch of our Rural Touring Support Scheme to help community venues in Richmondshire stage professional productions.

"From autumn onwards, we will be working with local promoters to stage performances at venues all over the place, so watch this space.''

Added to smaller grants from Richmondshire District Council, the money will help cover the cost of portable staging, lighting and sound equipment as well as display boards and spotlights for art exhibitions.

It will also buy a digital camcorder, projector, screen and a laptop computer for recording performances.

The equipment will be available to community organisations and individuals to hire at heavily subsidised rates and AiR will be able to arrange delivery from its base at the Middleham Key Centre.

Allowing for time to source and purchase the equipment, and access the funding, it is expected most of the items will be available from midsummer.
