A VILLAGE is to receive thousands of pounds from a developer as part of a housing estate scheme.
Darlington Borough Council's planning committee yesterday approved plans for 84 new homes in Middleton St George, near Darlington, on condition that the developer gives more than £100,000 to the village.
People objected to the plan for the Hadley industrial site, saying the village was already overdeveloped and local amenities would be stretched.
But Councillor Doris Jones told the meeting that further development on private land was inevitable.
She said: "If we can't stop the development here, as we would like to do, then let us look at some parish improvements."
George Wimpey North East will give the village £55,000 to improve a play area, £15,000 for traffic calming measures, £5,200 to help fund a new village primary school, £5,000 for tree planting and £25,000 for improving bus services and shelters.
