A COURAGEOUS young cancer victim has joined his school classmates to raise money for other children with the disease.

Thomas Burrows, a pupil at Gurney Pease Primary School, Darlington, is recovering from cancer of the kidney, but took part in numerous Easter-themed fundraising events.

The nine-year-old presented a cheque for £250 on Friday to a doctor from the hospital where he was treated.

Dr Steve Clifford, from Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary, accepted the money on behalf of the North of England Children's Cancer Fund. The youngsters raised cash by organising an Easter egg tombola, a raffle and other events. They also charged fellow pupils for turns on a bouncy castle in the school playground.

Thomas was a winner at The Northern Echo's Positive Young People awards last month.
