FORMER footballer Malcolm MacDonald helped launch a programme of walks aimed at promoting healthier living in north-west Durham.
The former Newcastle United player, known as Super Mac in his playing days, helped start the Derwentside Doorsteps scheme in St Stephen's Church Hall, South Stanley, this week.
He spoke to primary school children about the benefits of walking to health. It was followed by a walk throughthe Green Corridor and Stanley Burn Wood.
Throughout spring and summer there will be a programme of guided walks. A set of independent walk maps will be published later in the year.
The project follows a pilot scheme last year and is part of the Walking the Way to Health Initiative.
It is a joint effort by environmental group Groundwork West Durham, Derwentside District Council and Derwentside Primary Care Trust.
The first walk will be along the Lanchester Valley Walk on Wednesday, May 14, stopping at Malton Picnic Site on the way.
A leaflet with walk dates and venues will be available in doctors' surgeries, libraries, leisure centres and community centres, or from the Groundwork West Durham office at Craghead Village Hall. For details, contact (01207) 693202.
