A PROSPECTIVE taxi driver who was arrested at a licensing meeting on suspicion of burglary will not face any criminal charges.

John Embleton Cowx, of Shakespeare Road, Darlington, was apprehended by police moments before he was due to apply for a taxi licence at Darlington Town Hall on March 12.

He was taken to Darlington police station and later transferred to Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, where there was a warrant for his arrest.

He was bailed to return there on May 12, but was told yesterday that police had finished their inquiries.

"I'm not a burglar and I never will be," he said. "I think someone had put my name forward to do with some power tools that went missing from a building site where I had worked, but it was nothing to do with me.

"I'm just glad it's all been sorted out and I can apply for my taxi licence again."

The warrant for Mr Cowx's arrest was issued because he failed to produce insurance documents for his vehicle, after leaving the Cambridgeshire area.

The 37-year-old was fined £205 and given six points on his licence for that offence by magistrates in Peterborough on March 13.

A spokeswoman for Cambridge-shire Police said: "Mr Cowx is no longer wanted in connection with the burglary."
