A BUDGET airline is on a par with economy carriers for quality of service, according to an independent survey.

The Skytrax survey of 4.4 million passengers has shown that EasyJet is matching or beating the level of service offered on economy flights by British Airways, British Midland and British European.

The low-cost airline, which has a base at Newcastle Airport, beat all three traditional airlines for the friendliness of its in-flight service.

Its efficiency at check-in and boarding, and in-flight and baggage reclaim services matched those of British Airways and British Midland.

Passengers said that cleanliness on board EasyJet planes was also as good as on economy flights.

The airline consistently outperformed British European for check-in efficiency, boarding service, condition and cleanliness of the cabin, baggage delivery, and assistance for arriving passengers.

EasyJet operates flights from Newcastle to London Stansted, Barcelona, Alicante and Belfast and, from August 1, Paris, Bristol and Prague.
