CONSULTANTS Lamb and Edge has won a three-year deal with Newcastle International Airport to advise on property matters.

Having formed a strategic partnership with Copenhagen Airport in May 2001, Newcastle has reached a key point in its development.

The airport's increasingly commercial approach includes ambitious plans, and Lamb and Edge will play a key role in the planning and management of the property portfolio.

Its remit encompasses operational buildings such as the terminal and hangars, while ancillary developments such as the freight village will become increasingly important.

Mike Cuthbertson, a partner at Lamb and Edge, said: "We're delighted to have been chosen for this high profile property consultancy at such an important time for the airport.

"Our approach will be to become part of the airport's team and integrate our work seamlessly and effectively with theirs."

Mike Luddy, marketing director of Newcastle Airport, welcomed the appointment of Lamb and Edge.

He said: "Newcastle Airport has a large property portfolio which we feel has massive potential. Lamb and Edge's involvement will help us realise that, and assist us in driving forward future plans."

There are now almost 3.4 million passengers at the airport, and new services such as the easyJet routes are expected to increase the number of passengers significantly.

The airport's £27m extension, opened three years ago, and a £40m development for aircraft maintenance and ancillary purposes on its south side, is now proposed.

The south-side development will provide hangarage, engineering, catering preparation units and warehouses.

Construction of Phase II of the freight village was completed in 2000.

It brings the total of freight buildings at the airport to almost 7,000sq metres, including the new building of about 2,400sq metres.
