STAFF at one of the region's oldest theatres will say a big thank you to its supporters with a party this weekend.

The Empire Theatre, in Consett, County Durham, re-opened in March after a nine-month closure and a £700,000 refurbishment.

Venue bosses have organised a one-off concert for Saturday and have issued hundreds of free tickets for all those who contributed to the upgrade.

Nick Wiggins, theatre manager, said: "Although the venue has been operating for some weeks now, there was always a general feeling that we couldn't officially recognise the opening of the Empire until work at the front of the building was finished.

"The council was also looking for an opportunity to show its appreciation to individuals and groups within the community who have shown their support for the project, by reaching deep into pockets and contributing hard cash."

The event will feature Consett-born singer Susan Maughan, Pop Idol contestant Aaron Bayley and comedian Stu Francis.

The leader of Derwentside District Council, Alex Watson, will unveil a plaque at the opening ceremony, before the concert starts.

Along with thanking groups such as the Friends of the Empire, which raised funds for the revamp, the event aims to showcase the improved facilities to guests from the Arts Council.

It is the oldest traditional theatre in the county and has the largest cinema screen in the North-East. It is fully accessible for disabled people.
