PUPILS from Lakeside Primary School, in York, have been selected to represent the UK at the European Conference on School Mobility later this month.

At the conference, in Rome, the youngsters will be explaining the development of Lakeside's travel plan, which encourages pupils to walk and cycle, and has minimised car use to and from the school.

MUSIC NIGHT: Wensleydale School, in Leyburn, will hold an evening of music and flower arrangements next Friday to raise funds for the local tournament of song. The event starts at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5 and are available from Leyburn Tourist Information Centre, or at the door.

SOCIETY SHOW: A fashion show at Richmond's King's Head Hotel raised £562 for the local branch of the Alzheimer's Disease Society. The charity has expressed its thanks to organisers Gilt Edged and Well Heeled of Leyburn, and to all those who took part.

STEPPING DOWN: Judge Jonathan Crabtree, deputy resident judge in York, has retired after a distinguished legal career stretching back almost 50 years.

MOVING ON: Scarborough Borough Council's director of technical services, Derek Rowell, is to leave the authority. He is to join Isle of Wight Council as its strategic director of environment services.

FLAG DAY: Northallerton and Dales branch of the Samaritans will hold its annual flag day collection on Saturday, May 17. At 7.30pm, the Northallerton Male Voice Choir will give a charity concert at the Forum.

SALE TOTAL: Soroptimists International of Thirsk and District raised more than £200 with a car boot sale on the town's racecourse. A similar fundraising event at the same venue will be held on Sunday, May 18.
