A MOORLAND view, which could be blighted if a gas well gets the go ahead, is being used to promote an environmental initiative in Europe.

The leaflet was put together by the Farm and Rural Community Scheme, an experimental scheme launched by Prince Charles and started in Castleton, Westerdale and Commondale, aimed at bringing farming and the community together through "green" projects.

The controversial gas well development on Whyett Bank by Sterling Resource has been a source of much discussion over recent months.

Some members of Danby Group Parish Council believe the development is a positive move towards a cleaner fuel and reduction in greenhouse gases, while others feel it will have a devastating effect on the landscape and environment.

Parish Coun Linda Grout brought the FRCS leaflet and photograph to the attention of the council.

She explained: "This goes out to Europe - the FRCS scheme here will be used as a model for other communities that we've done some really good environmental work.

"But this is a view of the area where the gas rig will go if it is approved being used to promote an environmental scheme. I just think it's rather ironic. The title on the leaflet is 'environmental initiatives that make a difference.' "

Coun Grout is among members who have concerns about pollution from the gas well and the effects on the Esk River, as well as traffic pollution.

She also fears its effects on tourism and the landscape.

Sterling Resource's plans will be discussed at a North York Moors National Park Authority planning meeting on May 29, when local environmentalist Tom Chadwick will speak against the plans.
