THE Church of England and the Methodist Church are celebrating closer links as they prepare to sign a covenant of friendship and co-operation.

The covenant between the Diocese of York in the Church of England and two Methodist Districts will be signed at a service in York Minster, on Saturday, May 24.

The chairman of the Methodist district of York and Hull, the Reverend Dr Stuart Burgess; the deputy chairman of the Methodist district of Darlington, the Reverend David Vonberg, and theArchbishop of York, Dr David Hope, will sign the document.

And the 11am service will mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of John Wesley, the Church of England priest who became the founder of Methodism.

The covenant reflects the growing co-operation between the two Christian traditions on the ground, in sharing buildings, personnel, and increasingly in working together for the communities served by local churches.

Although the two churches are approaching the point of agreeing a national covenant, the regional agreement is regarded as without precedent.

A website has been launched with information on the covenant.
