NORTHUMBRIA Police Authority has appointed Kevin Mathieson as its assistant chief constable.

Mr Mathieson was selected on Thursday following interviews by authority members at Gateshead Civic Centre.

The 43-year-old, who is married with three children, has served with Grampian Police throughout his 24-year police career, joining as a cadet in 1976.

Authority chairman Councillor Mick Henry said: "Mr Mathieson was chosen from a very strong shortlist, and the fact that he was selected speaks volumes for his experience and his outstanding qualities as a police officer.

"He clearly has extensive knowledge and experience and I am confident that the police authority has appointed a man who will add considerable further strength to an already successful senior command team."

Mr Mathieson said: "I have long harboured a desire to come to Northumbria, as I have a great many friends in the area.

"This is wonderful news and I am delighted to have been appointed."

He will take up his appointment later this year as one of three assistant chief constables and will assume responsibility for management services.
