An amateur football team have made a healthy beginning to life by collecting four trophies in only their second season. And now the Queens Head of West Auckland plan on strengthening their all-conquering squad.

The Queens Head only formed two years ago but won the Saturday afternoon T&M Crook and District League in their first season and successfully defended their title in the season just ended, and added to that three other pieces of silverware.

Sitting proudly in their trophy cabinet are the Norman Wright Cup, the Albert Vickers Cup and the Durham Minor County Cup which is a fiercely-contested competition with 360 teams from all over the North-East entering. Also, the Colin Waites Cup would be in their possession were it not for Willington Club who beat the Queens Head in the final while they reached the semi-finals of the both the South Durham Bowl and the Weardale Cup.

Lee Alderson is team secretary and is the man to thank for setting-up the team in 2001 as, he says, there was a need for the team in West Auckland.

But the Queens Head, managed by Keith Lithgoe and Stephen Thompson, are not content with their remarkable season which saw them score exactly 100 goals in 22 League games so they intend on improving in 2003-04 says Alderson.

He said: "We'll be looking to strengthen, we have to really. We weren't expecting to have as good a season as we have done and we if have another good year next season we'll be looking to move up a League."

"All the lads from the village were going to play elsewhere. There hadn't been a Saturday team in the village for about seven years so we thought it was about time we got together and formed a side."

In defending their T&M Crook and District League crown, and achieving varying degress of success in Cup competitions, the Queens Head played a massive 49 matches this season
