The same weekend, John Wild travelled a little further and did a little more - he went to Buckingham School and competed in the British Masters's Athletic Federation (BMAF) Throws Decathlon and came home with the silver medal for the M50 age category. A throws decathlon is an unusual event as it is completed in a single day and there are only four throws in the Olympic programme - the remaining six are variations on a theme: brick, weighing 10kg and thrown like a shot; sling ball, a 1.5kg medicine ball with a leather strap, thrown like a discus; club, thrown like a javelin, mini-shot thrown discus style; one-handed heavy hammer, weighing 7.5kg and heavy hammer weighing 10kg. John put together an impressive set of marks to finish with a PB 6237 points, just 156 short of the winning total set by his friend and adversary, Merrick Bousfield of Liverpool PS.

JW results: shot 10m50, discus 38m65, javelin 37m70, hammer 40m98, brick 8m31, sling ball 49m09, club 53m67, mini-shot 24m77, one-handed heavy hammer 21m67 & heavy hammer 17m21.

Newton Aycliffe

The on-form Michael O'Sullivan achieved two more personnel bests over the last couple of weeks.

Firstly at Darlington on Thursday, May 8 where he competed in the White horse 5.5 mile handicap trail race. Michael's time of 36.43 was the quickest on the night for the club and by far a new personnel best for the form man of the Aycliffe club.

On Sunday, May 11 Michael set his second personnel best in the space of three day's, this time Michael took on the Fountains Abbey ten-mile multi-terrain course at Ripon. The tough course didn't deter Michael from putting in a fine run which was rewarded with a new personnel best time of 68.19.

Four of the clubs young athletes were at Middlesbrough for the North Yorkshire South Durham track meeting on April 29.

In the Under-13 boys 800 metres race James Askew stormed round in two minutes 52 seconds giving him a very well earned fourth place.

Adam Harker, who is now running stronger than ever, produced what must have been one of the performances of the night. Adam, a member of the Under-17 team, found himself mixing it with the vastly more experienced runners in the 800 metres senior race, and to Adam's credit finished in fourth position in a time of 2 minutes 10 seconds.

In the Under-17s 800 metres the club's lightning fast Lewis Moses once again showed his class to win the race in two minutes 3 seconds, not to be outdone Neil Robinson finished in fourth position in 2 minutes 14 seconds.
