Three people were taken to the University Hospital of North Durham, in Durham City, after the car they were travelling in left a road at a roundabout.
Two of the casualties had to be cut free from the vehicle by firefighters.
The accident took place at the Ouston/Pelton roundabout junction, on the A693 Chester-le-Street to Stanley road, early on Saturday.
