POLICE have completed inquiries into an alleged disturbance that marred a party for school leavers from a top-performing North-East state secondary.

The incident flared after a teacher appeared to take exception to remarks made by a sixth-former in a speech during a spoof award ceremony as part of Durham Johnston School's end-of-term function.

The teacher, Les Johnson, is understood to have been annoyed at the comments and confronted the 18-year-old school leaver.

Police were called to the recent function at the Ramside Hall Hotel, near Durham.

By the time officers arrived at The Bishop's Room, Mr Johnson, who teaches PE, and the pupil had been separated by other party-goers.

One guest said: "There were people screaming and shouting. The whole party turned into absolute chaos. No one could believe it happened."

Durham Police said initial inquiries suggested there were no injuries as a result of the fracas, and all parties were separated before officers reached the scene.

A spokesman said: "Technically, this was treated as a case of common assault and no arrests were made. Statements have been taken from all concerned and a file sent to the Crown Prosecution Service.

"We're now awaiting their advice before deciding if any further action is taken."

Mr Johnson was suspended from duty by the school on full pay and "without prejudice", pending the outcome of inquiries into the incident.

A spokesman for Durham County Council education authority said: "I can confirm a teacher at the school has been suspended on full pay pending a police investigation relating to his behaviour.

"It is likely the governors will await the result of that inquiry before deciding what action to take."
