NEWCASTLE United will discover tomorrow whether Brazilian target Ronaldinho will be plying his trade at Old Trafford next season.

Representatives for the Paris St Germain star have been in talks with Manchester United chief executive Peter Kenyon, and a decision is expected tomorrow.

Magpies chairman Freddy Shepherd was himself in Paris recently to talk to the World Cup winner's brother and agent Roberto Assis, but the likelihood now is that Sir Alex Ferguson will win the race for the £12m-rated star.

''By Wednesday we should have a definitive verdict on whether Ronaldinho goes to Manchester,'' Assis said.

Assis indicated there were no problems with the terms offered providing PSG agree to release their prized asset, who is contracted to the Parc des Princes club until 2006.

''The most difficult thing is for the clubs (PSG and Manchester United) to reach an agreement,'' said Assis.

Ronaldinho is currently on holiday in Brazil following a forgettable Confederations Cup, when he was sent off in the group match against Turkey.

Meanwhile, Scotland international Steve Caldwell has revealed his delight at still being a Magpie, despite a contract row that threatened to end his Newcastle career.

Caldwell looked to be heading out of St James's Park after branding Newcastle's new 12-month offer as 'derisory', but despite interest from Sporting Lisbon and Rangers, there were no firm offers for the 22-year-old.

Caldwell said: "I never particularly wanted to leave though it looked like that was going to happen.

"But it doesn't really matter what went on, as I'm happy to play for Newcastle United. I love this club and want to do my best for it.

"It's in the past as far as I'm concerned. Now I just want to concentrate on doing as well as I can."
