SOME of the world's greatest athletes, including world record-breaker Jonathan Edwards, will compete for glory on Tyneside at the weekend.
The Norwich Union Super League Athletics competition takes place at Gateshead International Stadium on Sunday. Taking part will be world indoor pole-vault champion Svetlana Feofanova, as well as runners Sonia O'Sullivan and Jared Deacon.
GALA DAY: Locke Park, in Redcar, Teesside, is the venue for a gala day on Saturday, from 11am to 4pm, with charity stalls, a bouncy castle, model railway, puppet show and face-painting. Visitors will be able to use the putting green and boats for half price. South Bank Brass Band will also perform. Locke Park is soon to be restored with a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and visitors to the gala can complete questionnaires and talk to council officials about the plans during the day.
JUGGLE BEER: A beer is being promoted by a juggling club, one of Durham's oldest pubs and a local brewery. Juggler's Drop is a Durham Brewery beer, which is now on sale at the Market Tavern, in Durham. The idea for the beer came from members of Durham City Jugglers' Club, who go for a drink at the pub after their meetings on Tuesdays. The club meets from 7pm to 9pm in the Shakespeare Hall, North Road, Durham.
LEAFLET DRIVE: More than 120,000 leaflets detailing attractions and events will be handed out to passengers on the Tyne and Wear Metro. Comedy duo Maxie and Mitch will today launch the Metro Great Days Out booklet, while dressed in Victorian bathing costumes and armed with a range of giveaways, including lollies and inflatables.
CONDUCT FIGHT: Ann McIntosh, Conservative MP for the Vale of York, has backed Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith's plans to do away with the code of conduct for parish councillors. Mr Smith made the announcement at the Local Government Association's annual conference in Harrogate.
BIKE DAY: People with disabilities will get out in York on adapted bicycles today. The project, the first of its kind in the city, will see people with learning difficulties try out tandem bikes and sidecars at Rowntree Park
