A PRIMARY school was awarded for excellence in sports coaching.
The Active Mark Gold honour from Sports England was welcomed with delight at Green Lane School, Barnard Castle, which is the first in Teesdale to receive the award.
Nicola Moss, PE co-ordinator at the school, said: "The pupils and staff are all really pleased because it proves we aim for a high level in all the sports we tackle."
The football team is coached by John King, of Sunderland Football Club, and has done well in competitions this year, coming second in the district league. A grant has been received to pay for Mr King's services.
The tennis team is coached by professional Geoff Thomas, who also coaches members of Barnard Castle Tennis Club.
The eight-strong team has reached the final of a county schools competition. The cricket and rugby teams also get expert tuition from members of the town's two clubs.
The school also has flourishing gymnastic and netball teams, both of which are coached by Miss Moss.
A plaque marking the award will be paraded at the school's annual sports day next Monday.
