A SCHEME will provide transport to doctor's surgeries and health centres for people with mobility problems.
It is being launched for the residents of Wheatley Hill, Thornley, Wingate, Station Town, Hutton Henry, Trimdon Station and Deaf Hill.
But more volunteers with cars are needed to come forward.
The scheme is designed for people who cannot use buses because of illness or disability problems.
Stephen Metcalf, of the rural transport partnership for East Durham, said: "We can match the time that a person is free to our requests.
"Even a few hours per week would be a big help to us.''
The project was devised after the Durham County Council-led East Durham Rural Transport Partnership consulted residents. It found a need for transport among the elderly and people with mobility problems.
Mr Metcalf said: "The scheme is based upon a successful project that serves five GP surgeries in Sedgefield borough.
"We have already secured funding to operate the project but we need to recruit new volunteer drivers to make it a big success."
A rate of just over 37p per mile will be paid to volunteers who will also get free training in emergency first aid, moving and handling, and fire prevention and safety.
Anyone who wants to volunteer or needs more information should call Claire Armstrong on (01325) 304204.
Parish councils and village community partnerships are involved.
