THE man who runs the University of Sunderland's students' union is looking forward to an audience with the Queen today.

Joe Williams, 57, was awarded the MBE in the Queen's New Year's Honours List, and he will be at Buckingham Palace to attend his investiture.

During his nine years as the university's students' union general manager, Mr Williams has revolutionised the way it operates, its standards, its profitability and the service it offers to students.

Mr Williams, from Aberdare, Wales, but who lives in Sunderland, said: "It was a real surprise when I was informed of the award.

"I was overcome, but delighted. To be awarded an MBE for something that I really enjoy doing is wonderful.

"I feel very lucky to have been given the chance to help young talented officers at the union develop and mature.

"That is the most rewarding thing. They tell me I have affected their lives for the better.

"I have never previously been in a job that gives you that kind of satisfaction."

University of Sunderland vice-chancellor Professor Peter Fidler said: "Joe has helped to forge an outstanding partnership between all of those involved in running the students' union, which has made it one of the best, if not the best, in the country."

Mr Williams was awarded an honorary Fellowship of the University of Sunderland in 1998, in recognition of his achievements.
