FORTY Bishop Auckland students are taking an action- packed Journey Through Art this week.

The group, from seven primary and three comprehensive schools, are experiencing art, music, writing, drama and dance through workshops, museum visits and travel.

The project has been arranged through the Bishop Auckland Excellence Cluster, which includes improving literacy standards and raising pupils' expectations in its list of aims.

During the week, the children are visiting Newcastle Quayside, the Baltic arts centre, Sunderland Glass Centre and the Lake District, where they will ride on an Ullswater paddle steamer and visit Wordsworth's home, Dove Cottage.

There will also be a chance to work with lyricist John Miles, who writes for West Life, Blue and Danni Minogue, and record a compact disc at the Northern Recording Studio, in Consett.

Artists will create an Aboriginal art tableau and a sculpture with Hunwick blacksmith Graeme Hopper.

The week ends with a performance in Bishop Auckland Town Hall on Friday night.
