FOUR teenagers who have made a valuable contribution to crime-fighting in Darlington have been honoured for their efforts.

Graham Mitchell, Matthew Fleming, David Ancell and Alastair Taylor received commendations from divisional police commander Chief Superintendent Michael Banks.

The dedicated group, who are all members of the Longfield Junior Crime Prevention Panel, have tackled a range of problems in the town and plan to take their work into local schools later this year.

During the past two years they have been involved in several initiatives, including a campaign to warn motorists about the dangers of leaving their property on view in cars.

As a result of their work there has been a drop in reports of anti-social behaviour.

Chief Supt Banks said: "This is a tremendous example of public spiritedness and community involvement, all the more valuable because of the commitment of this group of young people and their determination to improve the area in which they live.

"They have shown real leadership and thoroughly deserve all the plaudits."

Graham, 17, who lives in Harrowgate Hill, is a student at Darlington College of Technology and hopes to become a police officer.

David and Alastair, both 15, and Matthew, 13, are pupils at Longfield Comprehensive School.

Earlier this year the youngsters' efforts earned them a certificate from Durham's High Sheriff in recognition of their work in reducing crime.
