A PRIMARY school remembered one of its former pupils at a sports day dedicated to his memory.

The annual sports day at Heathfield Primary School, in Darlington, is a memorial to Iain Dixon, who died aged ten in September 1997 after being knocked off his bike.

Iain's mother, Liz, has helped out at the sports day every year since then, and yesterday was no exception.

Hundreds took part in a variety of sports and games, which took place all day.

The morning events were contested by children in odd numbered classes and the even numbers competed in the afternoon.

PE co-ordinator Keith McKenzie said: "The type of sports day we do here is a round-robin event.

"We have 15 events and the teams are picked out at random, with children ranging from reception class up to Year 6.

"They do two minutes on each event, and when the time runs out, they move on to the next one.

"It means all the children are doing something all the time, and even if one child is not so good, they may be on a team with a child who is, so there is just as much chance to win."

Parents turned out in force to watch the events, and there were prizes for those finishing first, second and third.

Mrs Dixon presented the Iain Dixon Memorial Trophy to the winning team at the end of the competitions.
