THE man leading the Government think-tank on the future of farming urged landowners to continue working with Westminster on initiatives aimed at ensuring the industry remains sustainable.

Sir Don Curry told those attending the launch of a regional farming and food delivery plan that it is vital they help highlight the importance of promoting local produce.

The plan, Farming and Food - A Framework for Change, sets out the Government's proposals for the Yorkshire and Humber region under the Strategy for Sustainable Farming and Food.

New partnerships between producers and retailers, the promotion of environmentally friendly farming, support and advice networks and assured food standards are all strands of the wide ranging initiative.

Sir Don said he has been encouraged by progress so far and the willingness of farmers to embrace change.

"I have been very impressed at the number of initiatives and examples of best practice that is taking place.

"I've seen in action exactly the type of collaboration and new ways of working which we are looking for.

"Rural businesses, farmers and food producers must share best practice and learn from successful examples of sustainable farming.

"We must invest our time and energy in initiatives which are founded on sound business plans and help improve returns through adding value in local markets or further the relationship between food producers and large businesses like supermarkets.

"Only by working together can we deliver change and move towards what we all want to see: more competitive and profitable farming and food sectors."
