HUNDREDS of Teesside youngsters will come under the worldwide spotlight today when they appear on a television sports channel.

About 1,000 youngsters, aged between eight and 16, competed last month in the two-day Teesside Sport Partnership Youth Games.

Highlights of the games will be shown today on Sky Sports 2 at 5pm and on Sky Sports 3 and Sky Sports Extra tomorrow at 1pm and 3pm.

"The games were a tremendous success and enabled many young people to test their sporting skills against one another," said Joan Wynn, of Hartlepool Council.

"The coverage on Sky Sports will result in worldwide coverage, which is fantastic because it will profile Hartlepool and Teesside as a whole."

Hartlepool's new £2.6m Brierton Community Sports Centre was the venue for basketball, athletics, girls' football and netball while Mill House Leisure Centre, in Hartlepool, played host to swimming and basketball.

Some events were held at Norton Sports Complex in Stockton.

The games, an annual Teesside event for the past five years, gave children from Hartlepool, Stockton, Middlesbrough and Redcar and Cleveland the chance to compete against each other.
