THE engineering know-how of some of the best of the region's young inventors went on show yesterday.

More than 500 students from schools across North Yorkshire displayed their design-and-make technology projects at the Yorkshire Air Museum, near York.

Sixty projects from secondary schools were being showcased at the event, organised by North Yorkshire Business and Education Partnership (NYBEP). The exhibition was a heat for the national Young Engineers for Britain contest.

The designs and prototypes represented all forms of engineering, from a rapid wine cooler and a robotic fighting machine to a hovercraft project.

Among those visiting yesterday was the first vice-minister of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, Dr Victor Bolotov, as part of design and technology work he is carrying out with York University.

The partnership advisor at the NYBEP, June Windross, said: "This event provides a fantastic opportunity for engineers of the future to showcase their work and be inspired by engineers from the business world."
