A YOUNG horticulturist has developed a non-toxic product to keep weeds at bay.

The eye-catching, environmentally friendly weed suppressant gel was developed by York horticulture graduate Richard Fenwick.

Sterile and non-nutrient, it consists of two natural plant extracts which act together as a barrier to weed germination. The gel has been designed for use in both the domestic and commercial markets. It is safe for humans and animals.

Mr Fenwick was able to develop his plans when Roger Benson, Business Link York and North Yorkshire's innovation and technology adviser, helped him get a £10,000 Micro Smart award.

The Department of Trade and Industry award, available for innovative projects from companies with fewer than ten staff, helped with the development the formulation of the gel and with product trials.

The gel, with a worldwide patent pending, is available in a wide range of vibrant colours as well as black or clear. It also comes in a variety of shapes.

Mr Fenwick explained that, while the solid shapes were ideal for use in plants in individual homes, the gel, in its more conventional form and applied with a syringe, was more suitable for use in nurseries and market gardens.

The weed suppressant lasts for about three months before it needs to be topped up.

"The gel offers a safe, environmentally-friendly alternative to weed killer products which are full of toxic chemicals," said Mr Fenwick, a graduate of Askham Bryan College.

He paid tribute to Mr Benson. "His support and advice was, and still is, invaluable and I could not have won the Micro Smart award without him. The application form requires a lot of detail which Roger helped me fill in and he also made sure I had all the criteria to win the award."

Mr Benson complimented Mr Fenwick and the gel. "It is a fine example of a classic, twenty-first century product," he said. "It is modern and in line with what people want nowadays - an environmentally-friendly, positive product which does not kill but instead prevents propagation of weeds."
