Sunderland Cherokees lifted the U12 title and Sunderland Commanches the U14 title at the Deeside Ice Club U12 and U14 tournament last weekend. Cherokees defeated Telford Terrahawks in the U12 final.

Grant Sharp scored a first period hat-trick, the first after just 56 seconds, to give Cherokees a 3-1 lead. Callum Davies added a fourth before Telford netted their second. Emma all's strike in the 25th minute secured a 5-2 win.

Cherokees were in goalscoring mood over the weekend hitting the back of the net 35 times form their six games while at the other end conceding only two.

They began by losing 5-6 to Solihull Kings in their round robin series. Sharp and Nathan Salem tied the scores at 2-2 after trailing 0-2 and Davies made it 3-3 on 17.09. That was the nearest they got to victory as Davies and Hall were the remaining scorers.

Rivals Whitley Arrows were next opponents for Cherokees and went down 7-0. Sharp opened the scoring in the first minute and his second plus a Salem shot made it 3-0 at the break.

Whitley with an inexperienced squad conceded another four in the final session. Salem, Sharp, Daniel Coffey and Joshua Lalande rounded off the scoring. For Sharp it was the first of two of his hat-tricks in the tournament.

Hosts Flintshire Flyers were next and they went down 9-1. Callum Davies started the rout on 41 seconds and were 4-0 ahead as Sharp (2) and Davies were on target inside 11 minutes.

Flyers' reply came on 13.40 and five without reply in the final period saw victory. Davies for his hat-trick, Michael Elder, Coffey, Graeme Robson and Salem were the marksmen.

The round robin series came to an end for Cherokees with a 5-1 win over Telford Terrahawks. Davies' goal in the fourth minute was the only goal of a close first period. Braces from Salem and Sharp in seven minutes extended the lead to 5-0 at 22.56. Telford's consolation came on the powerplay four minutes later.

That win gave Cherokees a semi-final tie against Flintshire, much closer than their previous meeting. Salem put Sunderland ahead at 07.54 and Sharp doubled the lead three minutes later. Callum Ross's strike in the final minute of the first period made it 3-0. Flyers hit back with two goals in the opening minutes of the final period. Davies's goal on 22.40 made certain for a 4-2 win.

Whitley Arrows were not at full strength without several of their top players. Arrows scored only one goal and that from Bobby Mole in their opening match. Telford won 4-1 leading 3-0 before Mole's goal.

Arrows also suffered defeats at the hands of Flintshire (0-4), Sunderland (0-7) and Solihull 0-3) and finished fifth.

Sunderland Commanches' victory in the U14 event made it a Wearside double. They were made to work hard to win against Whitley Mohawks in the final. Danny Lamb opened the scoring for Commanches at 02.27 and two minutes later Jamie Tinsley equalised for Mohawks on the powerplay. A closely fought encounter saw Sunderland regain their lead at 13.53 from Aidan Parker. With three minutes to go Mohawks thought to have netted an equaliser, but referee waived it off claiming the puck had not crossed the line despite appeals by Whitley Bay.

Commanches began their tournament with a 4-1 victory over Solihull Sabres. Martyn Dvies and Mark Robson gave Commanches a 2-0 first period lead and extended it to 3-0 with a Martin Thrimble effort. Sabres pulled a goal back only for Daniel Murdy to restore the three-goal lead in the 30th minute.

Whitley were next opponents for Commanches and was settled by a solitary goal in Sunderland's favour by Daniel Murdy after ten minutes. A clash between Mohawks' Andrew Wood and Commanches' netminder Mark Thurman brought a game misconduct for Thurman at 25.33. Wood received three minors plus a ten-minute misconduct.

Thurman's one game ban meant Thomas Murdy played Commanches next match against Flintshire Hurricanes. Daniel Murdy, Thrimble and Callum Pattinson had given their side a 3-0 lead inside eight minutes. Hurricanes pulled a goal back soon afterwards.

Murdy, Karl Nelson and Jimmy Moutrey struck in the final period in a 6-2 win.

Telford Venom tackled Commanches and went 2-0 ahead after 12 minutes. Moutrey netted Sunderland's first reply on 16.37 and Lamb equalised four minutes later for a 2-2 draw.

Commanches' second place behind Telford brought them up against Flintshire in the series. A much closer match than their other meeting which was only decided in the final minute when Parker scored. Murdy had put Sunderland ahead on 08.55 and Flintshire drew level on the powerplay with three minutes to go.

Mohawks' path to the final began by losing 2-0 to Telford, then with a 3-0 victory over Flintshire. Jamie Tinsley scored once in each period and Mark Nicholson added the third.

Following defeat by Sunderland, Mohawks brushed past Solihull 8-0. Tinsley picked up a hat-trick and Nicholson struck twice. Wood, Kris Pyle and Bobby Mole added the others.

Mohawks finished third in the group which meant a semi-final against Telford. Whitley had the better of the first period and Nicholson scored at 08.29 and 09.14 to put them 2-0 ahead.

Telford replied early in the final period but could not find an equaliser as Daniel Smith in Mohawks goal was outstanding.

In this tournament individual awards at U14 level, Whitley picked up three awards, Jamie Tinsley, top points scorer; Daniel Smith best netminder and Sam Zajac best defenceman.
