Lynsey Davison from Nunthorpe made the women's singles final as an unseeded player in last week's Hastings Direct Tour tournament in Nottingham, but lost out in the end to Welsh teenager Rebecca Llewellyn by 6-1 6-0.

The 23-year-old Teessider, having recently returned to the competitive circuit after an ankle injury, was outclassed in the final, but on the way there she had knocked out three much higher ranked seeded players.

These were Melissa Berry (Suffolk) seeded two in the quarter-finals; Berkshire's Annabel Youthed (four) in the semi-finals and Yorkshire junior Alice Mackenzie (eight) in the round of 16.

Her Tennis World colleague Claire Smith beat Jenny Budden of Notts in round one but then went out to Youthed.

In the men's singles the Durham and Cleveland number one, Derwentsider Daniel Kierman, reached his allotted quarter-finals place as the sixth seed. He had beaten a Lancashire player before being stopped by Yorkshire's Andrew Banks, seeded four, ranked 24 in Britain. Cheshire's Mark Hilton, number seven nationally, won the title.

Veterans inter-county championships

Women's O40 division three: Durham and Cleveland's early season unbeaten run was ended recently at Yarm by visiting Staffordshire. The exceedingly tight contest was won by three rubbers to two but the home county finished with a total of 50 games to 49.

The opening singles rubbers were shared. Shotley's Christine Heppell winning hers, but Emily Andrew of Sunderland Racquets, at number one, just lost hers. The doubles, however, went to Staffs for a 2-1 interval lead as Boldon's Sandra Maxwell and Wellfield's Anne Waldin went down. the second half doubles were shared giving Staffs the victory. If Durham had clinched two second set tiebreaks in two doubles rubbers, the story would have been different.

Durham and Cleveland 2 (50), Staffs 3 (49): Emily Andrew lost to J Medina 5-7 4-6; Christine Heppell bt M Hobson 6-4 6-3; Sandra Maxwell and Anne Waldin lost to K Dobson and S Phipps 3-6 6-7; Andrew and Heppell bt Dobson and Phipps 6-1 6-2; Maxwell and Waldin lost to Hobson and Medina 2-6 6-7.
