Durham League: After a good win over league leaders, Crook Glenholme, last week, Coxhoe failed to maintain the pace when they only took one point from their visit to Leeholme, who are reigning champions and have now moved into second place, three points behind Glenholme and four ahead of Ever Ready/Craghead.

Leeholme won by 78 shots to 61.

Darlington Veterans League

The President's Day, held at North Park, featured the Russell Leighton Shield in which 15 teams took part.

The East Ark trio of D Hodgson, G Grindley and G Lamb bowled well to win all their games in Group A and were joined in the final by another East Park rink of R Gent, J Glenholme and C Pratt who won Group B on shots difference. After winning five games out of six matches the two teams from North Park did well to finish runners-up in both groups.

The final was a very close affair with G Lamb's rink winning by one shot after a measure on the last end. Before presenting the prizes the president, Mr Albert Wilson, paid a special tribute to the league secretary Mr Peter Frith who had organised and run the proceedings in his usual very efficient manner.

The president also thanked the members of North Park including the ladies section who had provided tea and refreshments during the afternoon for all their help and willingness in making it a special and successful day for him and his presidential year.

Cleveland County

Cleveland's final matches of the year in the Newton and Adams trophies weres against Northumberland at New Delavil last Saturday.

Both teams were well in touch after 20 ends but again lost over the last ten ends. The Adams team went down by 136-160 winning two out of six rinks but the Newton game was very close at 169-172 both teams winning three rinks.

Best for Cleveland were Brian Horsefield, Maurice Jacobson and Bill butters, and Ted York, Rob Hull and Ron Hold. Cleveland's next event is the combined men's and women's finals days at Smiths Dock park Middlesbrough on July 19 and 20.

SWD Vets League

Spennymoor A produced the shock result of the week when they went to league leaders, Sherburn and won by four points. The Moors won by 61 shots to 52.

Durham failed to reach the KO stage of the Middleton Cup in spite of an outstanding team performance at Spennymoor where they were 20-2 victors over Northumberland, who were Northern Group favourites. Cumbria took 15 points from Yorkshire and tied with Durham on 39 points. They had a shots plus of 39 against Durham's 31 and will meet Norfolk.

Vane Tempest faced the very inclement weather to play their home match against Pelton Fell and were rewarded when they only dropped one point and so moved into the top spot in the table. The weather did have a major affect on the matches with three being postponed.

Brandon did play and came away from Mainsforth with an odd point victory when they won by 56 shots to 50.
