PLANS to turn around the fortunes of Stanley go on display on Thursday.

The plans will be on show at the Lamplight Arts Centre from 2pm to 7pm.

The public can also have their say about the plans at a meeting of the Stanley Town Centre Regeneration Group next Tuesday, at 6.30pm.

A panel of civic leaders, including North Durham MP Kevan Jones, Chief Inspector David Hogg, of Durham Police, and Derwentside District Council leader Councillor Alex Watson, will be answering questions at the meeting.

Mr Jones said: "Many efforts have gone into improving the town centre over the past year and all parties are working together to put it back on the way to becoming a successful, vibrant place.

"I encourage anyone who has an interest in the future of Stanley town centre to come along this Thursday and find out for themselves what is planned for the town. I would also urge them to attend the question and answer session."

Proposals include a skate park for the Kings Head playing fields, the redevelopment of the bus station and a £5m Durham County Council project to spruce up the library and social services building, in Front Street.

Other schemes are the restoration of View Lane Park, a swimming pool at the Louisa Centre and a housing development on the former Murray Park greyhound stadium.
