A GROUP which promotes walking as the way to health and fitness is marching into the Easingwold area.

The Hambleton Strollers are launching a series of routes through the market town later this month.

Walk leaders hope they will become as popular as those established for the north of the district. More than 50 people regularly walk around Northallerton, Stokesley, Hutton Rudby and Great Ayton.

Set up last year as part of the Countryside Agency's Walking to Health Initiative, the Strollers want to see similar schemes in place across the whole of Hambleton.

A series of routes, all starting and finishing at leisure centres or GP surgeries and lasting less than an hour, will be set up.

"Research shows that just 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day really can benefit health," said co-ordinator, Marion Archer yesterday.

"Our walks will help do that as well as introduce walkers to new parts of their towns and help create new friendships."

The Easingwold walks begin on July 21 from the Galtres Centre. Walkers should meet by 10.30am, wearing suitable shoes and clothing.
