THREE school nurses have received recognition for their work.
Rosemary Simpson, Helen Smith and Paula Scott have been regular visitors to Framwellgate Moor Primary School, Durham, since September.
As well as their usual duties of giving innoculations and carrying out health checks, they wanted to make their service more user friendly and so attended school council meetings.
The council is made up of two representatives from each class. Every three weeks it meets deputy headteacher Diane Buckle and the three nurses.
Mrs Buckle said: "Basically, they had to listen to what the children wanted and work towards it with them.
"They've just about worked all year since September culminating in our Healthier in School week, in June.
"They came and did workshops with all the children in the nursery and reception classes, talking about healthier eating, keeping clean and avoiding tummy bugs by good personal hygiene.
"They talked to the older children about subjects such as drugs, smoking and alcohol."
Such has been the success of the link with the school that the three nurses, who are based at Chester-le-Street Health Centre, were nominated for Investors in Children accreditation.
They received their award during a ceremony at the school.
