THE astounding effort it took to create one of the region's most treasured buildings has been detailed in a book launched by English Heritage next week.

After more than 30 years' research, author Sarah Brown has completed her work on the construction of York Minster.

Lavishly illustrated, the publication charts the 300 years that it took to build the minster, and provides the only comprehensive guide to its architecture and history.

York Minster: An Architectural History c1220 - 1500 will be launched in the building's Chapter House on Monday, in the presence of the Archbishop of York, Dr David Hope.

Costing £65, the book contains more than 350 black and white illustrations, 30 colour plates and eight plans.

A minster spokesman said: "The book provides not only an invaluable summary of the state of our understanding of the building, but also offers new insights into aspects of its complex and colourful history."

It will be on sale at the minster bookshop, and Barbican Books, in Fossgate, York.
