THE clean-up of part of the region's coastline is to share in the last major grants from the Millennium Commission.

The £10m Turning the Tide project, which is largely completed, will receive £485,979 of National Lottery money to create gateways to the County Durham coast.

The ten-year clean-up entailed wiping away the coal spoil that blighted the beaches of east Durham and creating a network of footpaths.

The scheme, which was funded by the Millennium Commission, has won awards and the coastline has been re-named the Durham Heritage Coast.

The International Centre for Life in Newcastle will receive £100,000 to build a conference and banqueting centre.

Felton Village Hall, near Morpeth, Northumberland, will receive £51,891 for enhancements to its facilities.

The money comes from a fund for enhancements to schemes the commission has given funding to.

The commission is due to be wound up in 2006 and its residual duties handed over to the new National Lottery distributor.
