A TEACHER suspended following a fracas with a teenager during a school-leavers' function will not be prosecuted.

But PE teacher Les Johnson may now be subject to internal disciplinary action by governors at Durham Johnston School.

Mr Johnson was involved in a disturbance at the function at The Ramside Hall Hotel, at Carrville, near Durham, in May.

Police were called, but no arrests were made as there were no injuries and the pair had been separated.

Statements were taken and a file was prepared for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

A police spokesman confirmed yesterday that the CPS has recommended that it would not be in the public interest to prosecute.

He said: "As far as we are concerned, no further action is to be taken and that is the end of it from our point of view."

Headteacher Richard Bloodworth confirmed last night that it would now be for the Durham Johnston School governors to decide what, if any, action should be taken against Mr Johnson, who is suspended.

He said: "Now that the police have essentially released the case and decided they will not be prosecuting, there will be an internal investigation taking place and a report will go to the school governors.

"In due course, it will be for them to decide what action is taken."

Mr Johnson will remain suspended pending the outcome of the disciplinary hearing.
