WINNING the supreme beef title at the Great Yorkshire Show was described as a dream come true for a couple who began their New Start herd the day they married in 1997.

The title was won by Sarkly Nellie, a six-year-old Limousin cow, owned by David and Mary Cormack, of Abbotts Close Farm, Sutton, Thirsk. The couple bought the cow as an in-calf heifer at the Red Ladies sale in Carlisle in 1999, where she was sale champion that day.

She was supreme champion at Otley earlier this year and female and reserve supreme champion at last month's Royal Highland.

Mr and Mrs Cormack started the herd with a handful of stock, but took the decision to expand after Mr Cormack was made redundant following the dispersal of Peter and Anne Laing's Ryedale herd. They now have more than 100 stock, as well as a bull livery service - Cormack Pedigree Services - for shows and sales.
